For 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in Walkabout Mini Golf, the course took place in a submarine under the sea. The glass views out were a core part of the environment, so I wanted to give them something to stand out. I wanted to add smudges, dirt, and scratches to the glass, and I worked with my lead at the time to develop a glass shader that was not only used for this course but every course with glass going forward.
The three main elements of wear were combined into channel masks, and then were controlled using an edge mask that was baked using an AO pass from Blender. This allowed us to either limit the wear to the edges to show dirt or away from the edges to show fogging. This made it very versatile and allowed us to get a lot more use out of it.
